Our Wives and Children First?
Our thoughts,
Many years ago, I had the opportunity to share faith with a well-known preacher in the brotherhood. A hard worker, scholarly, and sought after in all lectureship circles. A man I looked up to for some of the most memorable sermons ever proclaimed in our generation. Upon his revealing an overwhelming yearly schedule, and his broken heart over children gone astray, I lovingly told him (while looking inward to my own need to reconsider) that the reason so many preachers witness their children fall from grace is because we become more occupied with saving the lost that we forget about our household. All these congregations seek our talent to speak, but what about our children at home? He scoffed at that and said, "Sure, let's just stay home then and do nothing." Interesting reply from a brother who should have recognized the insight. A moment of weakness? Just fatigue from being on the road all year? Perhaps my insignificance as a French Canadian among Christian giants in America? Who knows but God. I won't judge him for that moment, other than, sometimes it is difficult for even some of the most prominent figures of our faith to see such a simple principle.
We are all humans trying to make it to heaven one day, and trying our best to help others get there. But my dear fellow saints, if we can't lead our wives and children, we are certainly missing something very valuable in our walk. The poor and lost will always be around, but our immediate family is only available to us for a short period. Let us give our love to them in Christ, guiding them towards His Majesty's house.
Let us rejoice, today is Sunday, the day of our Lord. May we bring our wives and children to the congregation filled with love and truth, for us? The EastCoast church of Christ.
"For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;" - Paul.
Stay focused, and stay positive. You are loved and appreciated.
Your servant,
SM
